A constituent of my Ragnarok world setting, this is a possible outcome for the final form of that worlds undead beings.

Essentially the Drugair is a mutant Zombie Lord, a creature for whom its very whims now constitute the will of all other lesser undead which it gathers around it.



The Cycle goes like this.

Zombie: The first stage of undeath, these shambling creatures have no minds of their own, and are driven in their insatiable lust for the life energy of all other beings. They are no stronger than a normal man but their relentless nature gives them the edge, in swarms they will attack, taking down any prey they can. Also unless the central nervous system is destroyed the zombie will continue to attack. When enough life energy is grathered the Zombie then evolves, to a Ghoul.


Ghoul: The second stage of the undeath, a Ghoul is stronger faster and possessing of raw animal cunning along side of its absolute hunger, A ghoul’s evolution incorporates a change in its basic body design; as its toes elongate to give greater ease in standing upon them while the rest of the foot also elongates to provide more leverage and spring, its tooth structure becomes better suited for meat, and the bones in its finger elongate into dagger sharp claws. By this time though much of its flesh has badly degraded. The next evolution of is known as a Lich.

Drugair: The third stage of undeath, when a Ghoul has become strong enough both its body AND its mind becomes improved. The Drugair is not only stronger and intelligent, but has the ability to force other undead under his command, making them even deadlier as a coordinated force and feeding himself from any kills they may make. Often a Drugair can be found in possession of weapons after figuring out that they would allow it easier kills. They can further evolve, to become a Lich.

Lich: The final form of an undead being, capable of taking command of other undead and utilizing their unholy command of life energies to perform a unique form of necromantic magic. The most powerful and successful of Liches are saught out by the 'Society of Black Hearts' to join their ranks, and those intelligent enough to understand the benefit and threat implied eventually become useful citizens of the world, viewing it from their own warped predatory perspective and realizing that they are not at all top dogs.



Any undead being may go though these stages but unless they were raised in a preserved manner (Revenant) they will only remember bits and pieces of their own pasts... and sometimes of the pasts of those they have eaten.
